 Definition of Infertility

Infertility is usually defined in two particular ways, (a) an inability to concieve naturally after 12  months of regular sexual intercourse with no contraception present, and (b) multiple and repeated ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages or perinatal loss.

Causes of Infertility

Whilst it is important to follow the directions of any infertility treatment you may be having, it is equally important that the root cause of your condition is correctly identified.

In this article I will be explaining some of the more common and probable causes of infertility.

The Importance of Identifying the Root Cause of Infertility.

Infertility can be caused by a number of factors occurring at the same time or by a single factor, since misdiagnosis can in many cases lead to further fertility problems and complications it is most important to identify the root cause at the very beginning of any treatment.
The most common causes of infertility in females can be outlined as follows:
  • Anovulation - Ovulatory problems in females are probably the most common causes of infertility, the failure to ovulate can be due to a number of factors with a hormonal imbalance being amongst the most common cause of anovulation, this can occur when the ovaries produce immature eggs making pregnancy an impossibility. Damage to the ovaries caused by surgery, ovarian cysts, tumors and other infections can also lead to the production of immature eggs. Premature menopause are also responsible for anovulation.
  • Fallopian Tube Problems - The main causes of fallopian tube malfunctions are viral and bacterial infections, abdominal problems such as appendicitis and colitis can also cause blockages in the fallopian tubes. Previous surgery that may have damaged the fallopian tubes rendering them unable to allow eggs to pass through successfully, and the more dangerous ectopic pregnancy that occurs within the fallopian tube itself are all major causes of infertility.
  • Use of Drugs - Smoking, alcohol and other drug usage have all been documented causes of drastically reducing the chance s of getting pregnant.
  • Immune System Problems - This can include autoimmune reactions leading to the forming of anti-sperm antibodies which kill sperm. Natural killer cells, which when present in excess, can damage the embryo in the uterus. The anti-nuclear antibodies cause inflammation of the uterus when present in excess. The presence of anti-sperm antibodies in the female's body kills off the sperms before they can fertilize the egg.

causes of infertility

There are many causes of infertility but they are quite easy to combat, more so when they are identified in the early stages. Using an holistic approach, which combines the use of prescribed medicines, adhering to a healthy diet, exercising correctly and regularly and an abstinence from drugs, nicotine and alcohol and a stress management program can all lead to very positive results.
Due to the very complex nature of infertility, the condition can only be resolved permanently by adopting an holistic approach, which will combat the root causes rather than concentrating on specific elements.
